Label materials “Required to complete” when learners need them for your promised outcome, “Optional practice” for extra activities they can skip, and “Keep for reference” for material they look up as needed.
Use this small system for a short, self-paced course. Put the words beside lesson or resource titles, so learners can tell what to do next without opening everything.

In this example, learners choose a message, write an introduction using the worksheet, then check their work. A second prompt adds practice; the glossary is there for lookup.
Choose the label before the color

Check dependencies: if Lesson 3 needs a worksheet, that worksheet belongs with the required work. A downloadable file is not automatically reference material.
Keep equivalent formats together: if a video and transcript teach the same required material, write “Required: watch or read.” Do not make the accessible alternative sound like extra homework.
Turn a vague title into a useful instruction
Before: Bonus worksheet
After: Optional practice — Try a second introduction. Skip this and continue to the final check if you have finished your first draft.
Use the full label at the lesson, activity or resource level. Repeat the same wording in the course outline and on the item itself; avoid labeling every paragraph. Keep the words visible even when color or styling disappears.
Copy three labels for your course
Required to complete — [title]
Do this before [next activity]. You are finished when [visible result]. Use [required resource].
Optional practice — [title]
Try this if you want more practice with [skill]. You can skip it and continue to [next required activity].
Keep for reference — [title]
Open this when you need [lookup purpose]. You do not need to read it from beginning to end.
Check one module in learner view
Follow only the required items. Can you complete the module’s promised result without opening an “optional” item? Open every required download and link. If something essential is missing, fix the route or the label.
Labels do not change access permissions or a platform’s completion rules. Check those separately. In systeme.io, use the Full vs Drip access guide to decide whether a later lesson needs to stay unavailable. Relabeling also does not remove anything you promised buyers.
Once the module is clear, apply the same system to the rest of the course. No new tool is needed just to write these labels.
Next, if needed: connect the route to your first lesson after login. Changing existing instructions? Use a course update notice to explain what learners should do.
